I have often adapted many of his beliefs about the psycho-therapeutic process to the process of teaching art:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">Remove the obstacles to growth<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">Avoid labelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">Teacher and student can be \u201cfellow travellers\u201d (avoid hierarchy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">Be supportive<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">Empathy- looking out from the student\u2019s window<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">Let the student matter to you<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">Acknowledge your errors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">Create a new teaching strategy for each student<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">Provide feedback effectively and gently<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">You can be taught by your student<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\">*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\"><em>One can take students further than one has gone, in terms of an artistic journey.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\"><em>Think of Nietzsche\u2019s aphorism, \u201cSome cannot loosen their own chains yet can nonetheless redeem their friends.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif; color: #000000;\"><em>Talk about yourself as an artist\/individual only in so far as it is helpful to the student. Honest self-disclosure is important for a genuine teacher-student relationship. I looked at the people in the orchestra, who looked calm, concentrated and at peace with themselves. I thought about how the many hours of disciplined, daily practice that musicians engage in, help them to confront the \u201cmoment of truth\u201d vis \u00e0 vis an audience.
